Fethard Guild formed the first I.C.A. summer school on Slievenamon in 1926.
Olivia Hughes was a woman of vision and a pioneer in many fields. In 1926 she reformed the Fethard Branch of the United Irishwomen, as the ICA was then known. Under her direction the Branch opened milk depots, opened a canteen at fairs serving tea, coffee, bovril and sandwiches - a service run voluntary on a rota basis. This continued until the marts replaced fairs in the 1950s. She was a great promoter of crafts and crafts made by the members were sold at The Country Shop in Stephen's Green in Dublin. In 1929 she was instrumental, among other members, in organising the first Summer School that took place on Slievenamon. In the summer of that year twenty women went up Slievenamon to a house belonging to the Misses O’Connell’s mother. Local farmers recall hiring out their pony and carts to the women, half daft as they saw them, to ferry the equipment up the mountain. For many of those women it was their first experience of camping and living on a mountainside, but some of them on that expedition have said that no other summer school, organised by the ICA, came even half way to equalling that wonderful working holiday. At the first school the women were taught how to make straw baskets, straw mats and they practised singing and dancing.
Summer Schools became an annual event until An Grianan, ICAs Adult Education College, was founded in 1954 through the generosity of the Kellogg Foundation.
Olivia Hughes was involved in the setting up of the National Council for the Blind and she learned Braille and took part in their activities. The Horticultural College at An Grianan was her brainchild as she realised there was no place for girls to study horticulture. Mrs. Hughes was Federation President from 1951 -54 and National President from 1955-58,” .
