Since I have always been interested in railroads, I’ve decided to start a series of caches highlighting some of the physical features that still remain of railroads that no longer exist in the central KY area.
This line was built in 1881 by the Elizabethtown, Lexington and Big Sandy Railroad and was purchased by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad in 1892. This connected Ashland and Lexington and the C&O obtained trackage rights over the L&N to Louisville. A switch yard and engine facilities were located in Lexington and the coaling tower still stands, storing concrete for the Clay Ingles Company. The large passenger depot which served the L&N as well as the C&O stood near the current bus depot in Lexington and was torn down in the 1970’s.
The C&O had a standard design brick depot and several still stand between Lexington and Ashland in Olive Hill, Mt. Sterling, and Morehead, as well as the large depot in Ashland. The line also had a few tunnels in eastern KY and is a very scenic route. After abandonment by CSX, the eventual successor to the C&O in 1985, there has been a slow movement to convert it to a Rail-Trail and a short section in Lexington has been completed. Several interesting short line railroads connected with the C&O over the years and they may make good subjects for future cache sites.
This section is on the proposed Rail-Trail which will hopefully get built someday. The cache 'One Hot Dog', which is a short hike away, is also near the old ROW. Cache is a camo'd matchstick holder with only a log.
