Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was written primarily by John Lennon but is credited to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The song was recorded and released in 1967 and appeared on the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. According to John Lennon, the song was inspired by a nursery school drawing by Lennon’s son Julian called “Lucy – in the sky with diamonds”.
Music critics consider Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds one of the best songs on the Sgt Pepper’s album and a classic representative of psychedelia. Shortly after the release of the song, speculation arose about the song’s drug reference since the first letters of the nouns in the title spelled LSD. Lennon maintained that the song was inspired by his son’s painting of his classmate Lucy O’Donnell and the story “Alice in Wonderland”.
In 1974, Elton John recorded and released a cover of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds with John Lennon providing back-up vocals and guitar. Elton John’s version topped the Billboard charts in January of 1975. Other covers of the song include one by William Shatner on “Transformed Man” (Shatner’s version has been voted the worst Beatles cover ever) and Cheap Trick on “Sgt Pepper Live”. The song has also been parodied by several artist including: John Fred and his Playboy Band (Judy in disguise (with glasses)) and Marilyn Manson (Luci in the Sky with Demons).
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (verse 1)
Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies.
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she's gone.
Hopefully, you won’t need kaleidoscope eyes to find this one.
Cache is log only. Please bring your own writing utensil.
