Country roads are one mile apart and criss-cross the Midwest in an elegant grid pattern. You always know where you are if you can find a street sign on the corner: 100 N, 650 E means you are 1.00 miles North of the county line and 6.50 miles East of the county line. Other than rivers getting in the way , what could go wrong? Have you ever tried to wrap a basket-ball with a flat piece of paper?
You can’t put a square grid on a sphere; and since the Earth is a sphere, every 6 miles or so you have to put a small jog in the road so that all the roads remains parallel. This “S-curve” on 100 North is one of those jogs and a reminder to all of us that we live on a sphere!
