Die Geest - Ein Gruß aus der Eiszeit


Eine Landschaft wird geboren
Das Gebiet, durch das die Ilmenau fließt, wurde am stärksten von der sogenannten Saale-Eiszeit geprägt. Diese vorletzte Eiszeit begann vor über 200.000 Jahren und dauerte mehr als 70.000 Jahre! Damals schoben sich von Skandinavien her gewaltige Gletscher über Norddeutschland und brachten Geröll, Sand und Lehm mit sich.

In einer späten Phase der Saale-Eiszeit reichten die Gletscher bis etwa 40 km östlich von hier. Sie hinterließen dort wallartig aufgeschobene Hügel, die Endmoränen, von denen viele kleine Flüsse mit Schmezwasser abflossen. Vom Wasser transportiertes leichteres Material wie z.B. Sand lagerte sich als Sander ab. Die vielen kleinen Flüsse vereinten sich schließlich zu einem großen Fluss.

Die Gletscher schmolzen endgültig ab und hinterließen ihr mitgeführtes Material: Erde, Sand, Findlinge usw. bildeten die heutigen Grundmoränen. In Senken und Mulden entstanden Seen.

Der Fluss wurde durch das allmählich versiegende Schmelzwasser immer schmaler, bis er schließlich seine endgültige, heutige Breite erreichte.
Die Ilmenauist ein mit dem Quellfluss Stederau107 km langer, linker bzw. südlicher Nebenfluss der Elbe im nordöstlichen Niedersachsen. Sie ist der bei weitem größte Fluss der Lüneburger Heide. Am 14. August 2009 wurde der Ilmenauradwegeröffnet. Er führt von Bad Bodenteichauf einer Strecke von 120 km bis nach Hoopte an der Elbe.

Am Rande der Geest - weisst du, wo du stehst?
"Geest" ist der Oberbegriff für die während der vorletzten Eiszeit entstandenen, sandhaltigen Ablagerungen durch die Gletscher. Dazu zählen Endmoränen, Grundmoränen und Sander. Diese Gebiete sind heutzutage recht mineralstoffarm und trocken: Seit über 100.000 Jahren sind sie der Auswaschung durch den Regen ausgesetzt.

Die "Geestkante" ist der direkte Übergang von der Geest zu einer anderen Landschaft, der Marsch. Diese flache Landschaft hat sich nach der letzten Eiszeit in der Nähe des Meeres und der angrenzenden Flüsse entwickelt: Durch den Wechsel von Ebbe und Flut wird hier fortwährend neues, fruchtbares Bodenmaterial angeschwemmt.

Hier an dieser Stelle gibt es natürlich keine Gezeiten und deshalb auch keine Marsch. Der steile Übergang von der Geest zu dem durch das Schmelzwasser entstandene Tal ist auf dem angrenzenden Wegabschnitt in Richtung Stadtzentrum besonders gut sichtbar!

Die Lüneburger Heideist eine große, überwiegend flachwellige Heide-, Geest- und Waldlandschaft im Nordosten Niedersachsens.

Nun zum Earthcache:
Es wäre schön, wenn du an den oben genannten Koordinaten ein Foto von dir und/oder deinem GPS machen würdest und mit deinem Log hochlädst (dies ist keine Bedingung). Dann folge der Treppe nach unten und zähle gleichzeitig die Anzahl der Holzstufen. Unten angekommen wende dich nach links und folge dem Weg, bis du an eine Info-Tafel gelangst. Bitte beantworte uns folgende Fragen:

1. Wie dick waren die Gletscher während der Eiszeiten in Skandinavien?
2. Wie wird das Gebiet um die Flussniederung bezeichnet?
3. Welche Frage wird unter der "Klappe" beantwortet?
4. Wie viele Holzstufen hat die Treppe?

The Geest - A greeting from the ice age

A landscape is born
The area along the river Ilmenau, was influenced most by the so-called Saale ice age. This second last ice age began about 200,000 years ago and lasted for more than 70,000 years! At that time, pushed their way from Scandinavia, with massive glaciers over North Germany and brought gravel, sand and mud with it.

In a late stage of the Saale ice age glaciers ranged east to about 40 km from here. They left there rampart deferred hills, the terminal moraines, of which subsided with many small rivers Schmezwasser. From the water transported lighter material such as Sand was deposited as Sander. The many small rivers, finally united into one big river.

The glaciers melted and left her permanently from the baggage of material: earth, sand, boulders and so formed the present-day ground moraines. In valleys and hollows formed lakes.

The river has been gradually dwindling by the melt-ever narrower, until it finally reached its final, present width.
The Ilmenau is a source of the river 107 km long Stederau, left, or southern tributary of the Elbe River in northeastern Niedersachsen. It is by far the largest river of the Lüneburg Heath. On 14 August 2009 opened the Ilmenau bike path. It runs from Bad ground pond for a distance of 120 km to Hoopte on the Elbe.

On the edge of the Geest - you know where you stand?
"Geest" the generic term for that is during the penultimate glacial period incurred and use abrasive deposits by the glaciers. These include end moraines, ground moraines and Sander. These areas are now quite low in minerals and dry: for more than 100,000 years ago, they are exposed to the leaching by the rain.

The Geest edge "is the direct transition from the higher land to a different landscape, the march. This flat landscape has evolved since the last ice age in the vicinity of the Sea and adjacent rivers: The ebb and flow here is continually new, fertile soil material washed ashore.

Here, at this point it is of course no tides and therefore can not march. The steep transition from the higher land to the valley formed by the melting water is on the trail section adjacent to the city center very well visible!

The Lüneburg Heath is a large, predominantly undulating heathland, sandy heathland and woodland in the northeastern Niedersachsen.

It would be nice if you at the coordinates above a photo of you and / or your GPS would make and upload to your log (this is not necessary).  Then follow the stairs down and count the same number of wooden steps. Below you arrive turn left and follow the road until you get to an information board. Please let us answer the following questions:

1. How thick was the glacier during the ice age in Scandinavia?
2. As the area is referred to the flood plain?
3. Which question is answered under the "flap"?
4. How many steps has the stairs?

You can log this Earth-Cache with answering the questions via E-mail. Should the answer be wrong, then we'll get!
