The village of Annacotty lies on the Mulcair River a few
kilometers to the East of Limerick City. It used to be bisected by
the busy N7 which links Limerick to Dublin. In recent years,
Annacotty was bypassed by a new road and bridge, which restored the
village to its peaceful existence. At the top of the main street is
the statue of Jackie Power, a famous local sportsman, whose talents
earned him the title "The Prince of Hurlers". His sporting career
began with his local club in nearby Ahane and he went on to give
distinguished service to the Limerick and Munster hurling teams.

At the other end of the village is the old stone bridge that
used to carry the N7 from Limerick, now routed over the much larger
bridge nearby. The Mulcair can be best seen from the old bridge.
Looking upriver one can see the water tumbling over the weir which
in the old days diverted some of the water to power Ireland's first
paper mill. The mill, recently refurbished, but now hosting a pub
and restaurant, is the tall grey structure to the right. After a
rainstorm, the usually placid Mulcair becomes a majestic brown
torrent rushing towards the Shannon, a short distance away.
