Cache placed with kind permission of the Foresatry Comission. The coords don't lead you straight to the cache: rather, the cache is 18 paces W of the coords given, as the thickness of the tree cover makes GPS signal unreliable at the precise site of the cache. Navigate to the given coords then read the hint.... you might want to bring something to leave at this remarkable tree, as many others have done.
This cache is in southwest England but the Wilts/Hants border, ie the SW/SE border, is only about 2.5km east. Collingbourne and Coldridge Woods were a part of the estate of the Marquis of Ailesbury, along with Savernake Forest, an ancient royal hunting forest: Ludgershall Castle, to the south, was a hunting lodge of Henry II and III, so we can assume these woods were in use as a royal hunting forest from a long time ago. In 1935 the Marquis sold Collingbourne and Coldridge Woods to the Forestry Commission, who still owns them; they were made open access lands under the terms of the Countryside Rights of Way act of 2000. The beech woods mostly date from a commercial replanting of 1937, but many older trees remain, of which one of the best is an ancient yew in Coldridge Wood.
