Go east on Hwy.26 from the junction with Hwy.180 just north of Deming. At 14.5 miles is Cookes Canyon Rd./Luna Co.Rd.A019. Look for a tall 40-50ft. water tank on the southeast side of Hwy.26 at this intersection. Go north on Cookes Canyon Rd. 1 mile (graded & maintained dirt rd) to a cattleguard at waypoint N32.25.712 W107.35.248. Immediately after that, turn left on the narrow two-track rocky dirt road to the west. From here on the road can get a little too rough for a low clearance car, although a small 2WD truck would have no problem. Another 4 or 5 miles and you will arrive at old Ft. Cummings. The cache is an easy ¼ mile walk from the stone corral at waypoint N32.27.657 W107.38.902. This is a good place to park. It is only a little over 100ft. rise in elevation from here to the cache which is at about 4,941ft. The terrain is open ground with a gentle slope but rocky. This is remote desert country so just remember to watch out for the heat, the mesquite and the rattlers! The cache is a 50cal. Ammo Box and contains a log book, lightsticks, paperweight, sheriff badge, Butterfield Trail information on floppy disk, postcards and a small book.
Take some time to explore the ruins of Ft. Cummings. Other sights to look for near the ruins:
