Cache Details
Located at the Lake Erie Seaway Trail Center on the shore of Lake Erie in the town of Hamburg, New York.

Opened in 2005 as a tourism and visitors’ center this brick building once housed the Wanakah Water Company. Beginning in 1896 this enterprise of Buffalo native John T. Roberts provided water for 12 customers with a windmill driven pump. Today, if you look to the northeast, you can see modern windmills used to generate electricity. At its peak of operations the Wanakah Water Company served lake shore area of Hamburg, including Athol Springs, Mount Vernon, Cloverbank, Wanakah, and other areas as far south as Eighteen Mile Creek. Exactly when they built the current building is not known but records show that it was in operation in 1920 and was expanded in 1958. Operations ceased in February of 1990. This cache is placed as part of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Geotrail, located within the Buffalo/Niagara Falls Region. This cache contains a unique hole punch which must stay with the cache. Use this hole punch in space #12 on the Buffalo/Niagara Falls Region page of your Official Great Lakes Seaway Trail Logbook. This hole punch is NOT a trade item.

This cache can be found 24/7. At night, please be respectful of the home near the area. The cache is not by the house.

Tips & Suggestions
You can park right at the location. On a good day you will get a nice view of the windmills in Lackawanna and of downtown Buffalo. Please take some pictures and post them with your log. We love pictures! ENJOY your adventure.
