Burton Hall Bridge Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to my note I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

If you wish to contact me about this cache please use my Email address below my signature and quote the GC number of the cache. Please note this system is not infallible and I may miss any such mail.

Geocache Description:

A small camouflaged clip-and-lock box near one of the bridges across the Selby Canal. This bridge is on a public bridleway and is not open to motor vehicles. Burton Hall Bridge is on the route of the Selby Horseshoe Walk. As with any cache around water, please make sure children are supervised.

The Selby Canal is some 5½ miles (8.9km) long and connects the River Aire at West Haddlesey with the River Ouse at Selby. Completed in 1778, it contributed to the prosperity of Selby as vessels could proceed down the Selby Canal to a Custom House at Selby and from there to the North Sea without stopping at the Custom House in Hull.

Due to the shallow depth of the Selby Canal (only 3'6" or 1.07m in parts) larger boats could not use the canal, and the construction of a new canal between Knottingley and Goole in the 1820s, together with the coming of the railways in the 1870s, effectively ended its commercial usefulness.

The canal is now used by pleasure craft and the tow path is an easy walking route where wildlife such as kingfishers, otters and deer have been spotted. The tow path between Burn Bridge and Selby has been levelled and surfaced with gravel.

When placed, the cache contained:

Notebook and pencil (please leave in the cache)
Smiley fridge magnets
Toy Story eraser
Swimming bath fish
Mobile phone charm
Cat toy mouse
Keyring torch
Wire model lizard
Travel bug
