History: Ruby's house sets on the Native American Trading Path. Hwy 119 and the Hawfields. Special Interest: One of the oldest "Mother Vines" the scuppernog grape cultivated here gave birth to famed wineries.
In 1948, Ruby moved into a tiny farm outside Mebane. The humble frame house was constructed of wood planks scavenged from another building (old barrack), and the boards still show the marks of their early use. Water was drawn from the pumphouse into a glavinized tub to heat for baths "That was Saturdays only. the rest of the time you sponged off or stank."
1927, Hutchens began to charge for his haircuts and shaves...before licensing for barbers began. Moved to Mebane in 1943, at 40 cents for a haircut and 25 cents for a shave.
