I recently came across a map of the
Beaver Brook North Reservation and noticed a place marked
"Cascade" on the map. I was curious what that might be so I checked
it out and, just in case, took a cache container with me. Well, the
"Cascade" wasn't quite as spectacular as I had hoped (I certainly
like the location of my
Belmont Waterfalls cache better), but since I had the container
with me already and it still seemed like a kind of neat place in
the woods that I wouldn't have known existed, I decided to go ahead
with the cache placement. Perhaps the scenery will even get a bit
more interesting after a period with more rainfall.
You can park about 300 ft away (N 42 24.320 W 71 12.780) by the
boarded up "William F. McLaughlin Administration Building" of the
former Metropolitan State Hospital complex that was mostly
demolished about 2-3 years ago to make room for a new condo
complex. Apparently there was some discussion of turning this
remaining building into a clubhouse for a golf course, but I see no
evidence of that happening. Alternatively, if you haven't found the
two nearby Findit caches on Mackerel Hill yet, the trails from
there connect to here and you can make a geocaching morning or
afternoon out of it. In that case, park at Elsie Turner Field off
Trapelo Rd, see Findit's caches for coordinates. If you feel really
ambitious, you could even hike all the way over to Rock Meadow and
do the caches there, too!
The cache should not be too hard to find even without a hint -
have fun!
