Leptoceratops: Hello!
I'm archiving your cache as it has been disabled for more than a one month and it is lost or completely damaged. Usually caches are visited and maintained within 30 days after disabling.
If you wish to unarchive your cache then please contact me using GC code or link of this cache.

If there are still leftovers from container I would appreaciate if other players could collect them so that there are no trash in the nature.

Happy geocaching!

Geocache Description:

Latviski Slēpnis atrodas netālu no Zemes mātes biroja - instalācijas, kas veltīta Lielajos kapos apglabātajiem. Diemžēl pats birojs tiek regulāri izpostīts; slēpņa novietošanas brīdī tas bija ļoti nožēlojamā stāvoklī. Jācer, ka atbildīgās institūcijas to atjaunos atkal.

English Cache is located near the Mother Earth's office - an installation for the people buried in the Great Graveyard. Unfortunately the office gets vandalized very often; when the cache was placed it was in very bad condition. We can only hope that it will be restored once again.

18. gs. Broce savos zīmējumos kapus attēlojis kā smilšu lauku. 18. gs. beigās 19. gs. sākumā kapu teritorija atbilstoši klasicisma stila prasībām tika izplānota no jauna. 1823. gadā Lībekā mācīts dārznieks Johans H. Cigra izstrādāja Lielo kapu plānojumu. Kopš 1969. gada Lielie kapi ir slēgti. Padomju periodā tos centās pārveidot par memoriālo parku.
Lielajos kapos apbedīti ievērojami sabiedriskie un kultūras darbinieki. Šeit atradās vēstures, dekoratīvās un lietišķās mākslas pieminekļi, no kuriem tikai daļa šobrīd atrodami dabā.

One tenth of Mother Earth's office

The object is dedicated to the people who made great contributions to the history of Riga and Latvia and whose places of burial in the Great Graveyard are lost. The project attests the desire to remind and remember the legacy of our past. Only about 150 tombs of remarkable people have been restored. It's impossible to renew the old graveyard. A commemorative site appeals to society to pay attention to exploration of it's own past.
In the ages when the mythological conceptions about the structure of the world were shaped people personified the powers that affected their chances of survival. The surrounding elements and the living conditions of those mythological individuals were the same as that of their creators from the universe of matter. A present day person connects the mythological images with attributes of the past, and conciously witnesses a rift between the mythical and real world.

The Great Graveyard

There was a plague in Russia from 1770 to 1772. To stop it's spreading Katrina II gave an order to prohibit burying the dead within the ambit of churches. In accordance with the order all the departed could be buried in a cemetary 300 axes (approx. 2km) out of a city. Consequently one of the oldest graveyards of Riga was established.
Initially the graveyard wasn't too well organised. The stacks were scattered without any order. In the 18th century Broce depicted the graveyard as a sand field. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries the territory was newly mapped out accordingly to requirements of classicism style. In 1823 gardener Johan H Cigra developed the layout of the Great Graveyard. The cemetary has been closed since 1969. There was an attempt to transform it into a memorial park during Soviet Union times.
A lot of outstanding social and cultural workment were buried there. There were monuments of history, culture, architecture, decorative and craft art in the graveyard. And now just a small part of them can be found there.
