Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at the base of one of the 2 living Widdringtonia cedarbergensis trees (Cedar) in Boontjieskloof that can be reached without a climb.

The Cederberg is known for it's Cedar trees but these have been largely destroyed by over exploitation and fire.

In the Boontjieskloof area there are several Cedar trees higher up on the cliffs and mountain top out of the reach of humans and fires. This Cedar tree is one of 2 in the area that can be reached easily.

This tree is also very interesting for 2 reasons:
Firstly one side of the tree has been ravaged by fire but the tree has survived this.
Secondly this tree is a very mature tree and seed cones containing seeds have been found under this tree!

If you spend some time in the Boontjieskloof area you could go about halfway up Skerpionspoort where there are some excellent specimens of the cedar tree and if you are lucky enough to be in Skerpionspoort in January you may just see the Disa’s as well.

The Geocaching base of the National Senior Scout Adventure (visit link) is held in Boontjieskloof every second year and the cache also contains some of the articles left by the scouts as part of the geocaching base activity.
