Visitors to Wompatuck State Park will notice the numerous buried
storage bunkers scattered through the woods.
I was living in Hingham during the 60s, when the State bought the
property & opened the gates for the first time. The place
had been abandoned since the end of the Korean War. The paved
roads were narrowed by the forest bushes growing in on both sides.
The bunkers were all open and accessible; cavernous
hemi-cylindrical concrete caves, with huge steel doors.
There was a lot to explore. It was a much more interesting place
than it is today.
Now the bunkers are all locked and the entryways reburied;
the vents and chimneys cemented shut. (photo above)
The cache is atop one of these bunkers. There are full grown
trees on top. The geometric shape and abruptness of the
mound is the only evidence that this is an artificial structure,
enclosing an empty dark volume that once held bombs and artillery
shells.
