Geocache Description:

Davis Silo Ruins

An interesting area. Not knowing much about the ruins (Silo and and other Building), a quick search of the Internet found the following:

Statement of Significance
The Silo has high-level local historic significance for its prominent location on the Princes Highway and for its association with the production of one of Moruya s early crops by local Coila area farmers. It has local scientific significance for its potential to reveal important archaeological information about and contribute to an understanding of grain storing and handling techniques and the scale of agricultural pursuits by Coila farmers in the early 20th century.

Description - Silo
Reds bricks approximately 23cm long x 8cm wide. 4m diameter and 7m high. Some timber framing remains. Timber ladder to western side of interior. Corrugated iron roof missing. Fire destroyed all but the one adjacent building.

History
Coila lies in the important late 19th and early 20th century dairy farming and wheat growing area around Bodalla. Built pre 1920, only the actual silo remains, the farm buildings having been destroyed by fire in 1980. The silo is currently in poor repair, having lost its former corrugated iron roof and some large cracks are appearing. James Purdy Davis owned the property upon which the Silo was built. The sign marking the site of the (now) public Reserve reads, "Neil Davis Reserve". The Davis family are well known in the Moruya district.

To get to GZ, if travelling north, turn left into Coila Creek road and park nearby. If travelling south turn right into Coila Creek road and again, park nearby.

The cache itself is located in the old building, under old bricks. Please ensure the cache is re-covered, although don't make it look as if something may be hidden there. The more 'just thrown there' type of look should stop the inquisitive muggle.
