Sculptors often plays tricks by creating pieces that initially look like familiar objects but are actually constructed out of other, unusual materials. For example, Gavin Turk’s Box 2002, where a cardboard box is actually made of bronze or Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog 1994–2000, where a balloon animal is recreated in sheet steel three metres tall.
Here is an example of such a piece. The artist has taken familiar three-dimensional items and re-created them using unusual materials. The difference between the materials is certainly arresting. Taken at face value art has the power to move and gives us a chance to pause and reflect on life. What do you make of it?
