Geocache Description:

A micro placed at a location close to the site of the Marhamchurch Inclined Plane on the Bude Canal. There is a log book but no room for a pen or other contents.

Construction of the Bude Canal started on 23rd July 1819. After a working lifetime that peaked in the period 1830-1860, the Canal was finally abandoned in 1901. The Canal carried Bude sand inland for use as a fertilizer and transported a variety of goods including cob for use in the construction of walls and buildings – examples of which can still be seen in Bude and the surrounding area.

The Canal was thirty five and a half miles in length and incorporated thee locks and six inclined planes. The first of the inclined planes was located here at Marhamchurch and utilised power from a water wheel to lift the tub boats 120 feet over a length of 836 feet. It was the second largest inclined plane on the canal – the largest being at Hobbacott Down where you may also find a Geocache.

During 2008-2009 the Bude Canal has been regenerated, its locks repaired and made operational and the navigation dredged between Bude and the seaward side of Helebridge.

We hope this cache will tempt you to explore a little further up the Canal when walking from Bude and the location can now be safely accessed by using the new pedestrian underpass beneath the busy A39 road. Ab alternative “cache and dash” is possible by parking at the picnic area at Helebridge. The coordinates for the car park are N50 48.307 W004 32.023.
