Ontario's mule car was an early form of public transportation. The Street Railway franchise was granted in 1887, 5 years after the Chaffey brothers founded the city, and the line began carrying passengers by 1888. Residents in the area had begun to settle along Euclid Avenue, from Ontario, seven miles north, to the mountains. The mules pulled the vehicle up a 1000-foot rise to 24th Street and then rode down the hill, standing on the platform in the back, with the car powered by gravity. The trip up the mountain took about one hour, but the return trip took 20 minutes. To find the cache, you will need to walk 280 feet South and look for another Plaque---9 young Pepper trees. This was placed in the ground in the 1950's, and most people do not see this small plaque. After reading this plaque, look behind for the cache hide.
