Geocache Description:

LT:

1) koks konglomerato uolos aukštis;
2) kokios uolienos sudaro konglomeratą.

Basic Info

A conglomerate is a rock consisting of individual clasts within a finer-grained matrix that have become cemented together. Conglomerates are sedimentary rocks consisting of rounded fragments and are thus differentiated from breccias, which consist of angular clasts. Both conglomerates and breccias are characterized by clasts larger than sand (>2 mm).

Conglomerates are classified in terms of both their rounding and sorting.

Texture

Paraconglomerates consist of a matrix-supported rock that contains at least 15% sand-sized or smaller grains (<2 mm), the rest being larger grains of varying sizes.
Orthoconglomerates consist of a clast-supported rock with less than 15% matrix of sand and finer particles.
Metamorphic alteration transforms conglomerate into metaconglomerate.

Clast composition

Conglomerates are classified for the lithologies of the clasts:
  • Monomict - clasts with only a single lithology;
  • Oligomict - clasts of only a few different lithologies;
  • Polymict - clasts of many different lithologies;
  • Intraformational - clasts derived from the same formation in which they are found;
  • Extraformational - clasts derived older rocks than the formation in which they are found.

Clast size

Conglomerates are also classified by the dominant clast size:

  • Granule conglomerate 2–4 mm;
  • Pebble conglomerate 4–64 mm;
  • Cobble conglomerate 64–256 mm;
  • Boulder conglomerate >256 mm.

Conglomerate Rock of Goats' Stove

is situated in front of the confluence to the two most beautiful rivers of Birštonas Municipality – Nemunas and Verkne.

This conglomerate originated from inter-till layers cemented with calcium carbonate, which precipitated from groundwater. It was formed during the Gruda (Brandenburg) and Baltija (Pomeranian) stages (between 12 000 and 24 000 BP) of the latest (Nemunas/ Weichselian) glaciation.

Since old times this unusual spongy rock of sand, gravel, pebble and boulders has been referred to as a stove of goats because the hinds, which by the locals were called goats, from the surrounding areas were fond of climbing and taking the sun over there. Rafters also came to like that place. Every year they used to bath in the water of the Verkne River those who were drifting rafts for the first time.

In 1984, the rock was declared a geological nature monument. The best view of rock is visible when sailing in the Verkne River.

In order to log a find add geotagged photo of Conglomerate of Goats' Stove and:
1) name measured height of Conglomerate;
2) answer to which Clast Size and Texture classification rock conglomerate of Goats' Stove does belong.

The most exciting way to learn about the Earth and its processes is to get into the outdoors and experience it first-hand. Visiting an Earthcache is a great outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy. An Earthcache is a special place that people can visit to learn about a unique geoscience feature or aspect of our Earth. Earthcaches include a set of educational notes and the details about where to find the location (latitude and longitude). Visitors to Earthcaches can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage the resources and how scientists gather evidence to learn about the Earth.
