Red Square (Wellington) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

-gonefishing-: The makeover for this park has been completed, but unfortunately the rather bland concrete and grass result has removed the reason for placing the cache here - the overwhelming impression of redness from all the matching street furniture.

Time to archive. Thanks to all who visited over the last 12 years.

Geocache Description:

Red Square (Krásnaya Plóshchad) is a city square in Moscow.

Red Square separates the Kremlin, the former royal citadel (currently the official residence of the President of Russia) from the historic merchant quarter known as Kitai-gorod. Red Square is often considered the central square of Moscow and indeed all of Russia, since major streets of Moscow radiate from here in all directions, becoming major highways outside the city.

The name Red Square derives neither from the colour of the bricks around it (which, in fact, were whitewashed at certain points in history) nor from the link between the colour red and communism. Rather, the name came about because the Russian word Krasnaya can mean either "red" or "beautiful" (the latter being archaic). This word, with the meaning "beautiful", was originally applied to Saint Basil's Cathedral and was subsequently transferred to the nearby square. It is believed that the square acquired its current name in the 17th Century, replacing the older Pozhar, or "burnt-out place".

The cache is a micro containing only a waterproof log sheet. You will need to bring your own writing implement. Please replace the cache as found. A degree of stealth may be required at some times of day.
