In 1881 anunincorporated village was started in the municpality of Arthur. Mr James Wesley Modeland was registered as homestead N e 6-4-27 and as the first white child born to the Modelands was named Elva, this was the name chosen for the village. In 1906 the Mainlands came from the Orkney Isles. Mrs Mainland operated a maternity Nursing Home. She also delivered many babies throughout the areaRecords show that during her years in Elva, Antler and Melita she had 651 deliveries listed in her records.
