This cache is located in the Millstone Hill Conservation Area, in between Manchester-by-the-Sea and Essex. This cache is easy to get to, Exit 15 off of Route 128.
The Manchester-Essex woods comprise an area of approximately 1,500 contiguous acres which were never farmed. Extensive rock outcrops and undisturbed soils result in high species diversity. In addition, both red maple and cedar swamp habitats are present. The area between Millstone Hill and the parking area is known as Cathedral Pines. There are beautiful views from the boardwalks built through the swamp area, they provide a great place to look for birds, frogs, turtles and other wildlife. The Related Web Site link above discusses millstones.
This cache is the highest point in Manchester (220 feet) and named for our oldest daughter, Paige. If you like this cache location, we recommend you check out the Agassiz Rock caches just across the street. GC24D1E Sunrise Cache in Gloucester is also quite similar. As was Agassiz Rock, Millstone Hill was a family hike favorite growing up. The terrain is similar, some steepness at times and the trail has plenty of roots and rocks. The last 50’ is a steep bushwhack. Please be sure to also check out our cache at the base of the hill, GC2GZBR.
This cache is a 7”x7”x5” Lock ‘n’ Lock. This cache may not be as spacious nor as luxurious as other Travel Bug resorts, but it has all of the comforts of home, just like a Bed & Breakfast. The fruit juice is always fresh squeezed, the maple syrup is always “real,” and the proprietors are courteous and friendly. If you should find a travel bug in this cache or any other cache, please be sure to log it electronically twice, once when you grab it and again when you put it in another cache. This must be done so that its travels can be tracked. You must be a signed on member to do this. If you are not a signed on member of geocaching.com and do not intend to become a member, please do not take the travel bug. Membership is free. Join up and get in on the fun. Please use caution when hunting and replacing a cache. A muggled cache could lead to the loss of Travel Bugs or Geocoins.
When it comes to trackables, PLEASE try to trade them evenly to keep this B&B in business! If you have a trackable, swap it for another, a 1:1 trade ratio. Or feel free to leave more than you take. You can always "discover" the trackables you don't take. If you don't have any TBs or GCs, feel free to grab one of the ones in the cache. The best outcome is when you can help a trackable with a specific goal (i.e. travel to a far away land) get to its destination.
We’ve populated this cache with tradable goodies that will be typical of our new caches to start. This combination of swag is likely to include: a collectible coin in a viewing box, a plastic coin pack, a fresh deck of cards, a Hot Wheels car, a rubber ball, stickers, and a fresh pair of alkaline AA batteries.
First-To-Find prize is an American coin rarer than our usual leave, a Peace Dollar from 1926 that is .900 silver. This coin bears the San Francisco mintmark (look near the eagle’s tail feathers on the reverse for an S). They stopped making dollar coins in 1935, until they began making Eisenhower dollars in 1971. We selected this coin for Paige because Ms. Liberty’s tiara makes her look like she’s got a “radiant brain,” which is what Paige has! Her parents met in San Francisco, so we’re commemorating that as well as her birthday, which is the day we planted this cache. Another FTF to chief turtles -- well done!
