1837. augusztus 22-én nyílt meg Pesten a közadakozásból felépített Pesti Magyar Színház Bajza József igazgatásával. A magyar nyelv pallérozása és az erkölcs nemesítése mellett a színház vezetoinek fo célja volt a magyar dráma felvirágoztatása. A Pesti Magyar Színház, amely az 1840-es országgyulésen a Nemzeti Színház nevet kapta, otthont adott a zenés mufajoknak is, hiszen a város egyetlen magyar nyelvu színháza volt. Itt játszották a kor sikeres népszínmuveit és az operaeloadásokat ugyancsak. (Késobb a Népszínház és az Operaház megnyitásával ez a két mufaj önálló épületben és társulattal folytatta munkáját.) Az épület 2000. szeptember 1-tol ismét a Magyar Színház nevet viseli, társulata azonban a régi Nemzeti Színház hagyományain nevelkedo és azt orzo muvészekbol áll.

Magyar Színház
The Pesti Magyar Színház was opened by public subscription under József Bajza’s direction on 22nd August 1837. Beside the improvement of the Hungarian language and the ennoblement of morality the main aim of the leaders of the theatre was to revive Hungarian drama. The Pesti Magyar Színház that was given the name Nemzeti Színház (National Theatre) by the parliament in 1840, also gave home to musical genres, as it was the one and only Hungarian speaking theatre of the city. Both the successful popular plays and the operas of the age were shown here. (Later, after the opening of the Népszínház and Operaház these two genres were continued in separated buildings with separated companies.) The building has been wearing the name Magyar Színház again since 1st September 2000, however its acting company consists of the artists who were trained on and still guard the tradition of the old Nemzeti Színház.
