Geocache Description:

Salmon Leap A traditional cache located at ‘The salmon leap’ on the road between Carrick and Teelin. There is a small car park or alternatively there is a pathway stretching from the bridge in Carrick to the salmon leap and, as the name suggests, the falls are a good place to catch salmon.

The Glen river divides the parishes of Glencolmcille and Kilcar. It rises in the northern end of the Sliabh Liag peninsula at the source of Lake Lughraman and winds southward through scenic moorland valleys flowing through the village of Carrick and on to "Ceim an Easa" or the Salmon Leap, the high point for all anglers, before entering Donegal Bay at Teelin estuary. While nowadays Teelinn’s fishing harbour is small compared to its near neighbour in Killybegs this was not always the case. The area has a long history of fishing, as the village has featured in maritime maps since the 1320s, and the "village for herringe and sometymes for salmon in the creek or bay Teelin" was noted in a document dating from 1608. As recently as 1898 the village was the leading cod fishing port in Ireland, and five years earlier the Coast Guard based in Killybegs noted that the greatest volume of landings in his division was not in Killybegs itself but in Teileann. It is still a centre for inshore fishing and small-scale commercial fishing, The cache is a small lunchbox with a log-book and some small swapable trinkets. Please re-hide carefully.
