Welcome to the Old Road to Skye series.
This series starts near the Old Tomdoun Hotel.
Parking on the road for two cars can be found at N57. 03.818 W5. 02.703
This is a series of 5 caches of various sizes all within easy reach of the footpath, there is room in some of the caches for TB, Geocoins and swaps. The walk there and back is approximately 5 miles and will take around 3 hours. Take your time and enjoy the fantastic views.
A mile or so before the Glen Garry viewpoint, where the A87 begins to leave the shores of Loch Garry, is the turning left for the road through Glen Garry to Kinloch-Hourn, described as the longest and most beautiful cul-de-sac in Britain. The little single-track road turns and twists for 22 glorious miles along the shores of Loch Garry and Loch Quoich all the way to Kinloch-Hourn, a sea loch on the west coast. The road passes the tiny hamlet of Tomdoun, once the junction of the main road to Skye, until the massive post-war hydroelectric schemes changed the landscape.
Our series starts here and follows a track through beautiful country side along the Old Road to Skye to Loch Loyne, which was flooded as part of the hydroelectric scheme. When the water is low parts of the old road and the two bridges are still visible.
During the summer months, depending on the weather, some areas in the Western Highlands suffer from midges so be prepared.
Other caches in the series are:
