Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Decatur County Cemetery Series! This series will take you to every corner of Decatur County and in between to discover the cemeteries of today and long since past. Who knows; you might just find some long-lost lineage!

The Old St. John's Lutheran Cemetery is located northwest of the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. To access this cemetery, enter from the south on a minimum maintenance road. The cemetery is the last stop on the road. In 1879, Rev. C. Meyer of Kankakee, Illinois had been sent as a missionary-at-large by the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod to work the territory of Northwest Kansas and Southwest Nebraska. Pastor Meyer and his wife and family settled on the homestead two miles east of Herndon. Services were first conducted in a sod church, but were later moved to a school house. In 1889, a new sod church was built, and a school was started along with services. A new framed church was built in 1904, and a parsonage was built in 1906. In 1925, the church was combined with a sister church in Herndon, and a new church, school, and parsonage was built in October 1925. In 1931, the church burned to the ground. A new church was built of brick on August 9, 1931. The church was later moved to Oberlin to further the growth of the Kingdom of God. The old steeple can be seen just east of the newer St. John's cemetery. Cache is a camouflaged ammo can with "Official Geocache" markings.

This being a cemetery series, the utmost respect when entering and searching is imperative. None of the caches involve ANY desecration of graves or cemetery property, and none should be reported or this series will be disabled. All caches are relatively easy and require little searching or bushwhacking. If a funeral service is being held in the cemetery, DO NOT ENTER. We want you to be respectful not only to the 'residents' of the cemetery, but to the families. Just use your head and you should do just fine. Please, NO NIGHT CACHING. Many of these cemeteries have curfews from dusk to dawn.
