This spot is a National Historic Site which has a cairn dedicated to the Chapman House. The Chapman house is the house that you can see behind the monument on the hill. It was built circa 1775 for Major Thomas Chapman, a pre-Loyalist immigrant from Yorkshire England and today it is quite possibly the oldest dwelling in Cumberland County. Although this site is a registered National Historic Site, there is very little to indicate to the passer-by that it is here. I have driven by this spot for years, as my wife grew up nearby and I had no idea it was here until recently. Perhaps this cache will get others to stop and appreciate the history of the area.
