Geocache Description:

Cache is only available from the road side / Kun tilgjengelig fra veien.
BRING A FINE PEN/PENCIL.

The orange building is still preserved, and today serves as an appartment and office building. The old brickworks facility is almost 800 years old.

ENGLISH:

The brickworks at Bakklandet ("Bakklandet is a borough in Trondheim") was established in the 13th century and was the King's property. Bricks produced here were probably used to build the "Arch Bishop's palace" near the Nidaros Cathedral on the other side of the river.
The brickworks expanded it's business and facilities in the 1860s, and in the 1890s it was organised as a corporation and changed its name to "Trondhjem Aktieteglverk".

By the turn of the century, the brickworks covered 16 acres (70 mål) and was known for its high quality products.

Bakklandet borough was an important industrial part of Trondheim for hundreds of years, and one of the first major settlements on "the other side" of the river. This area boasted shipyards (1600s->), Iron works (1700s->), other mechanical industries (1800S->) and a rope walk. Norway's first steam locomotive - "Thrønderen" - was also built here.

In the 1970s and 1980s there was much discussion amongst politicians, artists, local residents and developers about whether the main highway through Trondheim should pass through Bakklandet, and effectively tear down many of the old buildings preserved here. The road was never built (a completely different solution was chosen), and Bakklandet is today seen by both Trondheim residents and visitors, as one of the most charming parts of town.
