Geocache Description:

There are 11 actual destinations for this multi-cache; but don't worry, I'm giving you 9 waypoints up front so you will know exactly where you are going for "Stage 1". This is designed to be a nice lunch time walk in downtown Lansing. However it will probably take at least two days (if doing on lunch hours) as you will need access to a website for Stage-2 to decrypt the messages with the data you discover in Stage-1.

Terrain rating is higher due to length of hike. Actual terrain is sidewalks, steps, and streets.

Stage 1

This is purely data collection.  You will need to visit 9 locations.  This is designed as a walking route but you could drive it if so inclined, but that may actually prove more difficult.  You do not have to visit the waypoints in any particular order, walk whatever route works best for you.  The walk will take a minimum of 1 hour if you're going at a good rate and don't make any wrong turns.  You may want to plan on 1.5 hours and even split it into two days.

Please note, there really isn't anything at the base coordinates besides a potential starting position.  You really only need to visit the 9 waypoints.

At each waypoint you will need to collect some data.  Specifically you are looking for a nearby name and a 3 or 4 digit number in most cases.  These two pieces of information will be used to decrypt the encoded messages below via an Alphabet Key (AK) and a Cipher Key (CK).  The AK could be a person's name or the name of a building, etc.  The CK is usually a date or a building number.  Take a note pad (or print out the attached worksheets) and at each waypoint look around and jot down potential names and numbers that may have been used.  They should be easily observed from each spot.  Be careful though, if you find a name on one side of the street, the number could be on the opposite side if easily observed from the coordinates.  Most of the names and numbers are pretty obvious.  If you are within 15 feet of the waypoint you should be good in most cases.

Stage 2

After you have collected all of your data, go to the following web page: http://rumkin.com/tools/cipher/gronsfeld.php

Make sure you select "Decrypt".

Paste the encoded messages below (one at a time) into the "Your Message" box.  Then put in what you think may be the "Alphabet Key" (the name), and the "Cipher Key" (the number) for each message corresponding to the respective waypoint (WP) information you collected .  If you put in the correct keys, the message will be decoded.  Each message will reveal part of the waypoint for Stage-3.

Fill in the coordinates based on the decrypted messages

+____° ____' ____.____"          -____° ____'  ____.____"

AA      BB      CC     DD               EE        FF       GG    HH

Stuck?  Here is an example (this has nothing to do with solving this puzzle)

Example encrypted text: Mpdbznzi - gpl'wp hfbatoe wvz jwx zp aio urge xpc wnjf!!

Example AK = Lansing  / CK = 2010

Test it out...

Stage 3

After you have decrypted the coordinates, go to that spot and take the following code with you:

____       ____       ____       ____       ____       ____       ____       ____

3-1           6-2           7-2         4-1          6-4         12-7     12-11      18-17

The geocache is NOT at this exact location (but is very nearby), if you can convert the code above to letters it should point you right to it!

If you can't find it with this clue, decrypt the following message with the earliest date shown and the person's first name for the exact coordinates:

Kfjqz Ywkijuxk upkbvricbwj: Rlrip bzu xiwbtpcjwg vuiignzwv qfpvydjbue jl efci pclw, jrtbgcub vfci vbpq TJ, lcpzijqz pku lipl PY, jij lcpzijqz xpgzg xyaw xgfq ZX.

GOOD LUCK!
