A nice stroll in the park or just a quick cache 'n' dash in Maxwell Park near Glasgow. Our 1st hide, placed to celebrate the end of our 1st year of Geocaching.
Parking is free and can be found in the side streets surrounding the park.
One of the smallest parks in Glasgow is Maxwell Park on the south side of the city. The 21 acres of peat bog, owned by Sir John Stirling Maxwell, were donated to the Burgh of Pollokshields in 1878. The bog was drained to the lowest point to form a boating pond, which in the winter became a skating rink.
The Burgh Hall was completed in 1890, the year in which the park officially opened and the year before Pollokshields lost its Burgh status and was annexed by Glasgow.
The park's most impressive features were the bandstand and the magnificent Hamilton Memorial Fountain, erected in 1907. It was constructed by the Doulton company in the famous Italian white marble from Carrara in Tuscany, as a memorial to Glasgow brothers John and Thomas Hamilton, who hunted in the area when the land was a marsh. The French Renaissance-style fountain, with tiered basins and a hunting figure on top, has sadly gone the way of many others in Glasgow, suffering from neglect and vandalism and was unfortunately demolished in 1989.
Cache is a small lock-box with log book, pencil and space for a few small trackables. A small amount of stealth is required, as this is a popular local park.
Hope you enjoy this nice little park.
***Congratulations to Sweeney Toddlers on being FTF (had a feeling you would LOL)***
