The Cabin in the
Woods
During the 1997/98 school year
Cabot Middle School got its own piece of American
History. A couple of
teachers organized the first annual Pioneer Day at the
school. In order to
have the student’s experience what early pioneer life was
like, all the fifth grade teachers in all subjects spent weeks
working on lessons and activities that pertained to early American
pioneer life.
A 16x16 foot cabin, located in
Fulton County, built in the early to middle 19th
century, was located by the Arkansas Historical Preservation
Program. The teachers
wrote a grant proposal to assist in the cabin’s relocation to
the CMS campus. It was
carefully disassembled, labeling each log and rock, and reassembled
on the CMS campus.
On Pioneer Day, students
dressed in pioneer costumes, displayed pioneer crafts and foods for
sale, had a pioneer breakfast to start out the day, and a pioneer
supper of beans, ham and wash-day peach cobbler during a blue grass
music festival to finish out the day. The students not only learned to
quilt, make candles, make fire from flint, how to barter, and
weave, they also danced to a hoe down, walked on
stilts, churned butter,
ground corn, rode in a covered wagon, and were entertained by
pioneer re-enactors and specialists from the Arkansas Territorial
Restoration.
Our son was fortunate enough to
be a part of this first celebration and our daughter a couple of
years later, and as far as I know it is still an annual event to
this day.
The cache is not on school
property, but you will be able to see the cabin from its
location. You are more
than welcome to go visit the cabin and look around it and go inside
it.
You are looking for a container
that is well hidden, too small for trade items and you WILL need to
BYOP!
If
