Geocache Description:

The village of Malinbeg is situated at the western tip of Rossan Point and has magnificent views of the wild and rugged coast of this part of Donegal. The small working harbor (An Uaig) has been and still is safe haven for many generations of fishermen. It was also from here that the lighthouse keepers would leave to man the lighthouse on Rathlin O’Beirne island. An Uaig was in earlier times a base for monks to travel to the monastery on the island. Close by, the Silver Strand

“With the Act of Union in 1800 and the ongoing Napoleonic threat, the Authorities built Watchtowers along the coast as part of the North-West defences of Ireland. The towers at Malinbeg and Glen Head were built in 1804 and are part of a chain of twelve such towers extending from St. John’s Point, near Dunkineely, to Malin Head in the extreme North of Donegal. These watchtowers were all in sight of each other and were manned by a Naval reserve, known as the Sea Fencibles. If you stand at the tower in Malinbeg, looking North-East you can see Glen Head Tower, while to the South-East the Tower on Carrigan Head, near Teelin, is visible. Shipwrecks frequently took place along this coast, leading, eventually to the establishment of a lighthouse on Rathlin O’Beirne Island in 1864.”
While in Malinbeg take the time to visit The Silver Strand to see some stunning views of the gorgeous beach and surrounding rocky cliffs. This is one of the best beaches in Donegal and don’t forget to count the steps. Silver strand is popular with hikers as a starting / finishing point for a walk that crosses the notorious "One Man's Pass," leading to Bunglas and the spectacular cliffs of Slieve League
