Humptulips Ridge Lookout...
Not much is known about this forest fire lookout except there was a cabin on the spot in 1942 and a trailer in 1964. Everything was gone by 1970, nothing remains but a small flat clearing at the top of the hill. During the walk up the hill there is an occasional glimpse through the tall timber of the view they enjoyed fifty some odd years ago.
Driving Instructions...
About three miles north of Humptulips turn east on Donkey Creek road, follow it about eight and a half miles. Turn north on Forest Service Road 2204, then turn east onto Forest Service Road 2217 and drive to the parking coordinates posted below. The abandoned grade you'll find was Forest Service Road 013. The cache is about a mile and a half up this old road with an elevation gain of over 800 feet...
No need to bushwhack...
Stay on the road and follow the gps to each waypoint. You'll leave the main trail at the last waypoint.
Optional 4WD parking...
Although the grade is overgrown and quite brushy, the footing is solid and with the right rig it's possible to drive up to the next waypoint (the sharp switchback on the maps) . You'll be rubbing small branches most of the way but it'll save about half the distance and most of the elevation gain. I wouldn't advise driving any farther... this was the only good place to turn around that I saw.
