Geocache Description:

This cache is a continuation of a series on county courthouses begun by ccindyy/bubb in the southeastern corner of the state. It is placed here with their express permission.

Talladega County was established on December 18, 1832, from land ceded by the Creek Indians near the state's geographic center. Prior to Euro-American settlement the area was the home of the Abihka tribe of the Creek Confederacy. The name “Talladega” comes from a Muscogee (Creek) word meaning “border town”.
The county seat was established at Talladega in 1834. The courthouse was built two years later. Prior to that there had been a US land office for the sale of lands ceded by the Creek Indians established in Mardisville, just 5.2 miles south of here on highway 21 (see cache GCPXCX). This land office served as a courthouse in the early days. This building is the oldest courthouse in continuous existence in Alabama.
Downtown Talladega is loaded with history starting with the courthouse itself. The Talladega Courthouse was built in 1836, is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is the oldest working courthouse in Alabama. The entire courthouse holds history preserved. If walls could talk, the stories they would tell of, and the changes they've seen would leave us fascinated for endless hours.
Check out the historic marker at the north end of the square that tells more about the building. There is also a historic marker at the south end of the square that tells of a battle on November 9, 1813 between the forces of Andrew Jackson and “Red Stick” Creek Indians. Jackson was on his way to Horseshoe Bend at the time.

Congratulations to Juicehound62 for being the first to find.
