Geocache Description:

One day this will probably be the site for a new gas station. Until then, it's an excellent site for a cache!

A small loc-n-loc on an old home/business site now covered in woods. I saw what looked like 2 old well sites on the property (nothing you can fall into) and a partial wall of a very old building. I would love to know what this place used to be so hopefully someone hunting this can tell me. A few thorns here and there as well as some old debris you will have to maneuver around. This is not recommended to search at night for that reason.

Update 5/16/2011
Good news! The mystery of the “Oh Well” site has been solved. The following was emailed to me by our good geo-caching friend… Johnnie!

“I’ll start off with a little bit of history about Oak Grove School.

The old school before 1935 was located across the road from Oak Grove Church.
The church and school were small wood frame buildings. Dad’s sister was the teacher in the one room school. This building was on the edge of the Dave McClure property (where the wells are located).

In 1933, Mr. Orlando Morgan donated the land on which the Oak Grove School was built.

Georgia Power Company gave the timber. The patrons of Oak Grove cut the trees and hauled them to the sawmill. It was first planned to build a frame building. Jones Mercantile Company offered the bricks if the people wanted to brick the building. The building consisted of four classrooms and an auditorium.

In 1935, the school opened with approximately one hundred students. The first teachers were Mr. Sam Mashburn, Mr. Woodrow Light, Miss Jessie Chapman, and Miss Ouida Hubbard.

The first trustee was Mr. Dave McClure.

In those days, Dave McClure lived where your “Oh Well” is. He owned and operated a store in the corner. The old store had food, dry goods, feed, hardware, farm supplies, gas, and a post office. The post office was for O’Neal, Ga. I did have an old map, but can’t find now showing O’Neal on it.

My Dad purchased a 70 acre farm from Dave about a mile away, and Dad’s sister, the teacher, and her husband purchased the farm and store in 1947. They lived there the rest of their lives.
By the way, the store had it’s own well, and the house had two. They built two lakes, one on each side of the road. For water in the pastures. There were two big chicken houses that used one of the wells.”

Johnnie

Johnnie has also stated that he has spent hundreds of hours on this farm and in the house from 1948 till 1980, not counting all the time in the store.
Thank you so much Johnnie for sharing this priceless bit of history about our area.
