Mawaihakona
This cache brings you to a forest-enclosed stretch of the
Mawaihakona Stream that runs through Trentham Memorial Park. The
Maori name refers loosely to the overall Trentham district, but is
actually translated as "the stream where water had to be scooped
from". The stream was important to local Maori as it eventually
feeds into the Hutt River, and in 1950 an ancient Maori canoe was
dug out of the stream, which indicates the importance of this
stream as a local transport route.
About the cache
The cache is a camo'd 200ml Sistema container with a logsheet,
pencil and sharpener.
About the location
The cache is located in a remnant stand of bush within the confines
of Trentham Memorial Park, on a walkway known as the Domain Bush
Walkway. There are two entrances to this short bushwalk, but to
locate the cache you will need to start at the Trailhead entrance
so that you can find the co-ords for the Final!
Finding the Cache
The published co-ordinates will take you to the start of the
walkway, where you will find answers to the following questions
that provide the cache's final co-ordinates:
S 41 08.11A
E 175 01.B5C
A = No. of bolts used on the nearby sign (minus 1)
B = No. of planks that make up the nearby seat (bottom +
backing)
C = No. of letters in the 2nd white word on the black backdrop
(plus 1)
The path through the bush is fenced off so you won't need to 'bush
bash' to find the cache - The cache is located within 0.5m of the
path so it is within reach. Note that walkers, runners and mountain
bikers can appear at any time without warning so time your
extraction / replacement carefully!
Due to the tree canopy overhead, you will experience significant
GPSr 'wander' - I put the current co-ordinates at +/-3m but YMMV.
Give the GPSr time to settle down and you will be rewarded
Please make sure that the cache is replaced
*exactly* as found as we don't want this to go
MIA!
Logging your Find
I am using a log sheet for all Geocachers to record their
discoveries, and when it is full, I will scan the
logsheet and attach its image to this cache as an archive. Please
let me know when the logsheet is nearing maintenance time and I
will supply a new sheet.
