The walk to the ruins of the "Vieux Château " (old chateau) of
St-Cergue with a wonderful view to Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc.
At the beginning of the 14th century, the lord of Thoire-Villars,
built this fortified chateau on this remarkable place to defend the
strategic Saint-Cergue road. The structure didn't remain long in
the hands of his family. After falling under the control of several
different overlords, it was finally destroyed in 1476 by Swiss
fighters in one of their attacks against the Burgundians. All
that's left today are a few vestiges. "La Ballade à Béatrix" or
"Ballad to Béatrice" is the name given to a learning path relating
to the final episode in the history of the "Château de St-Cergue"
which was destroyed during the Burgundian Wars. The path offers a
marvellous panorama over Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc. There are 2
large tables nearby, a BBQ area, and quite a few benches. So on
clear days I'd recommend taking a picnic or BBQ with you and spend
some time there.
