Oh the Places You Will Go Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

TeamLegoTJL: Archiving so that another cacher can place a cache in the one spot where one of the stages was. I will be moving that stage to a new location and will reenable once it is in place

Geocache Description:

This is a 6 stage multi-cache puzzle starting in the Brighton Heights Neighborhood of Pittsburgh and then continuing in various locations in the North Hills. In all, the locations are all within a 6 mile radius. This puzzle is very challenging and can take many hours to solve and find and you may get stumped and may need to head home or take a break and do some research and try again another day to find the next stage. If you want to tackle it all in one day, then have a good pair of shoes as there will be walking, both up hills and through woods. You'll also want to have paper and pen as well as a complete printout of the cache description including the Stage 1 grid picture and you'll want to do some research or take a device that you can access the Internet on to assist with research

The name of this cache was inspired by a sermon by the associate pastor of the church my husband and I attend who got his inspiration from Dr. Seuss. It is here where you will begin your journey and on this journey you will find some interesting and lesser known places. At the church, you will find a plaque on the outside of the building with two years listed on it.

For the first or earliest year, find the year and then plug the numbers into the below formula:

YYYY (i.e. 1985)
ABCD (A=1, B=9 and so on)

For the second or later year, find the year and then plug the numbers into the below formula:

YYYY
EFGH

Each letter will represent a row and each number that is in the formula represents that column numbered 0-9 on the Stage 1 grid picture in the images that you will then need to look to find another number which will then be plugged into the final formula to come up with the second stage's coordinates which are:

N 40 2A.BCD
W 79 5E.FGH

To get you started, the first year begins with a 1 so A will equal 1. So
for row A, you will look at column 1 in the grid and the number is a 9 so in the final formula, A will equal 9. If you figure out this, then you should be able to figure out the other 7 missing numbers once you have the two years

When you arrive at Stage 2, look for the name Rubenstein and answer the below questions to help you solve the coordinates for the third stage.

1. For Charles what is the month and date in MMDD
format for the date of his birth? You will then plug the MMDD into
ABCD (i.e. 1023 would mean A=1, B=0 and so on)
2. For Mendel what is the month and date in MMDD format for the date of his death? You
will then plug the MMDD into EFGH

Once you have that information, plug the values into the below puzzle to come up with the coordinates for the third stage:

N 40 BA.C3D
W 79 5F.HEG

For Stage 3, you will be looking for a small camo tube about the size of a pack of Mentos. Inside you will find a piece of paper. You will need to research how a Scytale cipher works in order to understand what to do with the piece of paper. Once you have figured it out, read from right to left and then up and down to get the coordinates. Your starting point will be the N. Once you have found the coordinates, place the paper back in the tube so the next treasure cacher can find it

For Stage 4, you will be looking for a small camo plastic container that is normally used to store photos. Inside, you will find a bag that contains a circle. The hint here is to find out how a Ninja Star works. This will give you the coordinates for Stage 5. Again, once you have the coordinates, get things back to how they were when you first found it, so the next person can be challenged as well.

For Stage 5, you will be looking in what is considered a park, but don't expect to see ball fields or a playground. There is parking on the street nearby wherever you can find it. You will be looking for a camo plastic container a bit smaller than the container from Stage 4. Inside you will find a card with a decrypted Masonic cipher message that when decrypted will give you the coordinates for the final stage. Another card with a key to decrypt the message is also included. Once you have the coordinates, place both cards back in the cache for the next person

For the final stage, you will be looking for a 0.75 liter camo container and this is the final cache that contains the log book and pen in a bag. There is also a special Pirate Treasure geocoin prize for the FTF and other small trade items. A picture of the coin is in the images

Congrats to Penny's Pack for the FTF and taking of the coin as the prize for FTF. Enjoy the hunt for those remaining caching hunters

Have fun and enjoy the places that you will go. If you get stumped please send an email and I will respond with additional hints and/or confirmation of correct coordinates
