10-10-10 Power Walk? Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

katcogo: AFter a lot of thought I decided to archive this series. it was set up as an activity for a 10-10-10 event on Oct 10, 2010 that besides celebrating 10-10-10 and 10 years of Geocaching it was an attempt to break a previous record for finds logged in a day (it did). It has had a great run.

This is not really a nice spot to look for a geocache as the blackberries have taken over. Container has been removed.

Geocache Description:

A level short walk to the Powerline Trail on Burnaby Mountain with great views.

This cache was placed as part of the 10-10-10 Flash & Scatter event which included this and other unpublished caches.
Burnaby Mountain has over time been named Snake Hill, Barnet Mountain, and finally Burnaby Mountain.

The Royal Engineers known as Sappers under the command of Colonel Richard Moody built the North Road from New Westminster to Burrard Inlet in 1860, following a straight line up and over the Mountain.

This was a defensive measure to protect British interests in the area prior to the settlement of the 49th parallel as the boundary between the US and Canada.
There needed to be a quick route to salt water in case the Fraser River froze over (which it was known to do).
The small settlement of Aliceville was located at the north end of the road.

Simon Fraser University was built at the top of the mountain in 1965 and became a hotbed of political actrivism during the protest years of the late 60s and early 70s.
At one point Gaglardi Way was unofficially renamed the Ho Chi Min Trail.

The Trans Canada Trail comes up the west side of the mountain, then down to the Barnet Highway at the north end of the Powerline trail that the cache brings you to.
Just in case hikers feel reinvigorated from their descent, there is a lovely marker across the highway noting how many thousands of miles farther it is to Newfoundland.

Today, the land on the outside of the SFU ring road has been dedicated as the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area.
It is a popular mountain bike area so keep your eyes and ears open as mountain bikers can come along quite quickly and silently.
