Geocache Description:

This cache wants to draw your attention away from the unchallanged beautiful beaches to the ancient sites of this unique greece island, its orientation towards the Liviko Sea and its difference to other lively regions...

With this cache we want to entrap you in a time where people did not come here to enjoy the beautiful beaches of the Liviko Sea but to deal with other eastern mediterranean cultural areas.

Join our thoughts and take a short walk up the hill (parking site available nearby at the beach) where you will find the excavation site of Xerokambos on the right hand side.

If you are not able to imagine what the walls of this excavation site stands for. If you can not correlate the stones you see to what they may have stood for … we think that's no problem ...

So, maybe you could sit down at the little chapel on the hill (or wherever you feel comfortable) best in the early morning hours, when the sun rises or in the evening hours when it's getting more quite than it is in Xerokambos anyway.

Close your eyes, listen to the waves of the near Liviko Sea and let your mind take you to the far away daily life in ancient times... Maybe the urbanisation on the left hand side (excavation site) is the ancient settlement Ámbelos. Maybe you think of a ship on the Liviko Sea just arriving at the seaside of Ámbelos. Maybe the traveling salesmen on this ship what to offer their oriental goods from the Middle East or other far regions. Let your mind tell you a story about this far away time...

You should not be in a hurry coming here to log the cache because it's more a kind of slowmotion cache. Take your time and you may find out what makes this place different to others. At this moment you may understand the real meaning of our cache.

As other nice places on this beautiful island and elsewhere on the world also this area can not stand the perpetual improvments. We think that it is only a question of time that this very special atmosphere of Xerokambos will be gone forever. You should try to get an idea of what we mean as long as it is possible. We are afraid that also this region is at a certain turning point.

We hope that the more people can follow this/our thoughts the more people may behave more regardful related to this 'islands of peace and silence' what this special eastern part of Crete – Xerokambos - still is.

To quote an inhabitant of this village:

Our greatest treasure is nature – we have to keep a balance between this treasure and the fact that more and more people want to visit this place. This is a great challange!

Please keep this in mind while coming here and help to preserve this treasure as long as possible, thank you!

The cache is hidden and you have to remove 'something' to get it – please do this carefully! We recommend to be very carefully grabing in holes or other unclear aeras – especially if you are searching togerther with your kids for caches on crete. You should know that there are some kinds of animals which could harm you more or less. It is not very likely to encounter these animals while you are on your cache tour. But it is better to know about any possible risks!

Wear shoes which fit the environment - flipflops are not recommended!

Many thanks to WIND&WATER for supporting our cache in case maintenance is needed!

We wish you happy hunting!
