Treasures of Frankfort #3 For more than a century, a Civil War cannon has stood watch over the Frankfort harbor. By the time of the Spanish American War, these cannons were no longer feasible for use in battle. These obsolete cannons were not sent back to the foundries where they were made, but were made available to any community that would want a cannon. There seems to be no record who was involved in bringing the cannon to Frankfort. Most likely it was a group of GAR veterans who were involved, and the cannon arrived in Frankfort in 1898. The cannon was cast at a foundry in Fort Pitt, Pennsylvania in 1863, and it is not known if this cannon was used in the Civil War battles. At one time there were six or eight cannonballs sitting along side to give a realistic look to the cannon. Over time these cannonballs have disappeared.
