Treasures of Frankfort #4
One of Benzie Co. famous residents was Bruce Catton, Pulitzer writer and Civil War historian. Born in Petoskey, Catton grew up in Benzonia where his father was a minister and headmaster at the Benzonia Academy. It has been written that Catton, as a young boy listen to the stories told by the Civil War veterans of the village. Catton wrote in his autobiography, Waiting For The Morning Train, that these stories made a lasting impression. In 1916 Catton entered Oberlin College, but did not finish his degree work because he joined and served in the Navy during World War I. After the war, Catton became a reporter and from the 1920s through 1941, he was a Washington correspondent. During World War II, Catton has several positions in the government. After the war he decided to become a full-time writer. He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1954 for his book, A Stillness at Appomattox, his written account of the final days of the Civil War. In 1954 he became the founding editor of the American Heritage Magazine. In 1977 President Gerald R. Ford awarded Catton the Presidental Medal of Freedom, our nation’s highest civilian honor. President Ford said that Catton, “made us hear the sounds of battle and cherish peace.” In 1952 Catton wrote Glory Road which told the Civil War history from Fredericksburg to Gettysburg. Catton’s summer home was in Frankfort and the road where his home was located was named for his famous book. After a short illness in 1978, Catton died and was buried in the Benzonia Township Cemetery, resting in the place of his formative years.
