Geocache Description:

I worked at East Stroudsburg University for over 22 years and never realized that Julia was a veterans memorial.

The son of former East Stroudsburg University (ESU) President, George N. Kemp, was killed in Argonne Forest during World War I. ESU alumni purchased a memorial to honor him and the 198 ESU graduates, students and faculty members that served in the war. The memorial statue became a point of interest and meeting place for students. It was a popular location on campus that was familiar to all in the ESU community. The statue’s name, Julia, was derived from Julius Caesar, the Latin work that was studied at East Stroudsburg State Normal School in 1919. In as much as students gathered at the statue to compare their translations of Julius Caesar’s Gaelic Wars, the statue became known as Julia.

On Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. East Stroudsburg University held its first Veterans Day Celebration at the Julia statue in honor of our veterans and those currently serving our nation. There was a wreath laying ceremony which consisted of a 21 gun salute and taps. Hopefully this celebration will continue in the coming years.

Shortly after this event the original container went missing. It has now been replaced with a different type of container.
