Geocache Description:

Walking on the Wild Side Trail – VSGTW Welcome to Visit Stillwater’s Walking on the Wild Side GeoTour Trail! This trail will take you to several locations and attractions around America’s Friendliest College Town for all animal lovers to enjoy! See why Stillwater is a great place to geocache, live, and visit, not just for you, but for your furry friends.

Looking for an unforgettable and incredibly educational activity to experience with your youth? The Oklahoma Cooperative Extension has the only live bug petting zoo in the state! Come see over 30 species of living arthropods along with a professional entomologist to walk you through the exploration and handling. This attraction is open every first and third Saturday of the month.

For some reason, people come by here and think there is some strange elevator-like contraption in the middle of a field. What you are seeing is a screened-in area for insect collecting. At night, the UV light attracts 'bugs', who start circling the light. As the 'bugs' circle the light, they run into one of the metal fins around the light and fall into the screened-in area below. There is a full-sized door on the south side of the box, and the public is welcome to come collect trapped insects for their bug collections (personal, school project, whatever). It is specifically kept unlocked so that anyone may use it at anytime.

In the building near the collecting area is the Insect Zoo -- a mini-museum that groups can visit. There are 'bugs' to hold, displays of mounted insects and other arthropods, educational displays, all kinds of neat things. They have kids and adults visit all the time, and there are even a couple of camps in the summer.

This cache is placed with permission of the OSU Entomology Department's Insect Zoo director, who is happy to have the bug collecting box attract people who want to learn about insects (in addition to scoring a geocache!). The cache isn't hard at all, it was going to be inside and a magnet, but the enclosure is aluminum!!! [Lucky for you bugophobes!! :) ]

I named this Zoo Bob, because it's at a sort of zoo, and my daughter calls all flies "Bob", and for people doing alphabet challenges, they need some good zzzzz caches. . .
