What happens to railroads when their railway companies go belly up? They become suburban streets, of course.
Since this is my first cache to hide, I thought I would follow the suit of a few other local geocachers and hide something where, not only would you find a fun cache, but you might learn a little about the fine city of Bedford.
The name of the street that this cache is hidden on is actually an acronym for Wheeling and Lake Erie, which was a railway that ran through Bedford back in the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s (I believe the trains you may hear while in Bedford today are on tracks owned by Conrail and not the current manifestation (it has gone bankrupt 4 or 5 times in the past century or so) of Wheeling and Lake Erie Railways – but I could be wrong).
According to street lore that was told to me when I moved here 10 years ago, this street used to be part of the actual Wheeling and Lake Erie railroad (hence the name of the street). The brown house across the choo-choo avenue and then to the left from the cache supposedly belonged to the stationmaster in this area in the early 1900’s. He had this house disassembled in New York State, moved here piece by piece from New York State and reassembled on its current location. Talk about dedication to a home.
This cache is hidden in a church's overflow parking lot (cache placed with permission from the pastor), so Sunday morning visits will be muggle filled and are not recommended. The house across the street is not mine, so don’t bother the people there. :)
Since it is the month of October, the initial cache has some fun Halloween themed items.
