A short and straightforward multi which will take you up Watts Rd from North East Valley to Abbeyhill Rd in Pine Hill. It’s only 10 minutes walk up the hill to the cache.
IMPORTANT: Leave gates as you find them.
Since sheep graze over the road, dogs are not recommended.
Three waypoints (all with explicit clues) and a final 1 litre screwtop. Hint: turn Waypoint One upside down and tap firmly against your hand. Let us know when it falls apart so we can replace it.
Watts Rd is a public road that has been little-used over the last few decades. Look at the Walking Access Map to see the road marking in purple.
An Abbeyhill Rd resident says that his neighbour (whose family owned the old dairy farm) remembers going down Watts Rd in a horse and cart 65 years ago. Local children used to walk down it to NEV school. It was cobbled in those days, but the road surface got damaged when power poles were put in down the road alignment, and damaged some more when macrocarpas and gums planted on the road boundary were felled. Now the road has been marked with white stakes and painted fence posts as a walking connection between North East Valley and Pinehill.
From the top of the tarseal on Watts Rd, go 15- 20 metres up the driveway of #88 on your right (but not as far as the cattle stop). Scramble up the bank to the start of the track.
Follow the white posts and painted fenceposts straight up the hill to the first waypoint.
WP1 Description: Watt Large Boulder? In plain sight; no need to move anything. 1 m from end of stone wall. Please replace carefully.
You’ll see the old road formation; the stone wall is built along the centre of the road alignment. Detour around the west side of the hedge at #88 (which is actually planted down the centre line of the road, with the carport built two feet over the road boundary).
The track has four fences to climb over or through, but all are easy- no barbed wire. Remember to climb over at strainer posts, never over a gate! At the top there is a stile at the sealed end of Abbeyhill Rd.
After finding the cache, why not keep going to the top? Check out the magnificent view and the letterbox of #11 Abbeyhill Rd. Then turn right and walk along Campbells Rd, past Campbells are Cunning, down to Bethunes Gully and back via Norwood St and North Rd. The loop takes two hours.
