This is a mystery cache - (see below). Wheel-chair accessible. Barely any walking required from parking. There are some steps but the location can be
reached without using the steps. This is just off a very busy
road and junction (A68 and Oxnam Road) - so beware the
muggles. You are looking for a blue static noticeboard.
The cache is located about 100m from this point along level
terrain.
Hope you enjoy your visit. This is our first cache.
A mystery cache. Permission has been granted by Jedburgh Old and
Trinity Parish Church to place a cache within the church grounds.
Access to the cache is only available through the church grounds.
The grounds are close to neighbouring houses and it would be
preferrable not to search after 10.00 at night, in order to be
considerate and avoid noise disturbance.
Parking availabe in the Abbey Tollhouse Cafe car park (known to locals as 'The Glebe'), which is across the road from Jedburgh Old and Trinity Parish Church. It is advisable to use the underpass to cross the A68. There is also an underpass further up for buggies and disabled access - opposite the entrance to the Abbey. Take the path which descends slightly to the right and the underpass will take you to the other side of the road. Then take the path up to the left to proceed to the cache clues site.
The cache is located at the followingco-ordinates: N55ab.c0d W0023e.1ff.
To establish theco-ordinates put in the number of letters this word contains (N.B symbols (like &) don't count as words) - e.g geocaching is fun - the 1st word would be the number 10. Except for telephone digits which count as face value - eg. 2 = 2.
a = 2nd word
b = 4th word
c = 5th digit of telephone number
d = 1st digit of telephone number
e = 10th word
f = 1st word
The cache is located within 100m on easy terrain - would be suitable for wheelchairs until last few steps. The container is a plastic clip lunch-box which contains the usual small items for swapping - would fit a geocoin but not a large one - unless you removed most of the other items. You should get a good view of Jedburgh Abbey as you approach the cache - the abbey is well worth a visit if you have time (admission charged by Historic Scotland). Other local sites of interest are the Castle Jail and Mary Queen of Scot's House. If you come in February watch out for HandBa' Day and in July the Jethart Callant Festival is a great spectacle with Festival Day being an event not to be missed. Jedburgh Old and Trinity Parish Church there are unconfirmed reports of Christian worship in Gedwearde(one of the ancient names for Jedburgh) from as far back as700AD.
Certainly, bishop Ecgred of Lindisfarne had some presence and influence in the area from around 850AD. From 1560 until 1875 the congregation had worshipped within the Abbey. The church building was much repaired and altered over the next three centuries. By the late 19th Century the Abbey church building was becoming difficult to maintain and was too small for the congregation. The local land-owner, the 9th Marquis of
Lothian, provided money for a new church on this present site. Under the entrance archway can be seen an inscription reading "This church built by Schomberg Henry, 9th Marquis of Lothian was opened for public worship on 11th April 1875"
Recently the two Church of Scotland congregations in Jedburgh have happily united to form one Church, Jedburgh Old and Trinity Parish Church. The church may be open for visiting during the summer months (see board outside).
Congratulations to The Wasp & The Currie Monster on the First to Find.
