Geocache Description:

The Roxburgh Branch (Railway) Series.

The Millers Flat Railway Station Platform

This would have been a busy and noisy place when The Roxburgh Branch Line was in its’ heyday.

Then there would have been the chuffing and snorting of steam locomotives, the rumble of trucks delivering fruit, the baaing of sheep, the barking of dogs, the yelling of commands and expletives of stockmen and the quieter mutterings of those who were waiting on the platform.

There would have been the busyness associated with the loading and unloading of wagons; the shunting and shuffling of the various components of a train’s rolling stock. No doubt, at times, the activity would have been frenetic.

Nowadays it is a very quiet, peaceful place. On none of my visits there have I seen another person and the only noises have been the sounds of traffic on Highway 8 over on the Clutha River’s west bank, the sounds that children make at play and the sounds that cattle make when munching grass and eliminating the by-products.

A timeline for the Railway at Millers Flat:
15/11/1924 the rails reached Millers Flat.
15/12/1924 A goods and parcels service between Millers Flat and Beaumont commenced.
In 1968 the Branch Line was closed and in August of that year the Millers Flat Rugby Club bought the now surplus station building.

For a most impressive collection of facts, figures, photographs and the history of this branch line I woud recommend

"Exploring New Zealand's GHOST RAILWAYS."
By David Leitch & Brian Scott, revised edition 1998.

and, also,
"Rails to Roxburgh"
by W J Cowan.

The container is a green "Bison" with a log only. Please BYOP.
