The Star of Canada was a cargo ship. It sank on a rocky reef at
Kaiti Beach, while steaming into the port of Gisborne on a stormy
night in 1912. The crew saved the cargo but were unable to save the
ship. They managed to cut away the wheelhouse and load it onto a
barge. the harbour tugboat towed the tug to shore. No lives were
lost. Mr Good, a jewller, bought the wheelhouse and towed it
through Gisborne streets to Childers Road where he turned it into a
house. Today, the wheelhouse of the Star of Canada is part of the
Tairawhiti Museum.
The museum and Star of Canada is well worth a look through. The
Captains cabin can be viewed and many other features. The museum is
open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm, Sunday and public holidays
1.30pm to 4pm. Closed Easter Friday, christmas Day and Boxing Day.
